1971 Topps Test "Rocks O' Gum" Lids Complete Set Collection: TWENTY Sets (1,100 candy lids) Including Woody Gelman Card
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $356
This series issued by Topps in 1971 consisted of lids designed to cap tubs of two different gum products: "Gum Berries" and "Rocks O' Gum." We should really refer to these as "printed in 1971" as opposed to "issued in 1971" as we don't believe they were ever actually issued! This is a totally overlooked, exotic, and in our experience, scarce Topps test issue. We've seen this crazy, colorful set in complete form several times over the years, and each time the tabs on the side of the lids (which allowed the gum tub buyer to pull the lid off the top of the tub) were unfolded, as is the case here, indicating that these examples were never issued. During the past few years there has been a find of these perfect unissued lids (which we don't think is more than approximately 100 sets), and the offered collection of twenty complete sets, each comprised of fifty-five different lids, originates from this find. Each lid advertises for "Rocks O' Gum" on the backs. The set is highlighted by the card picturing "Mr. Gelman" tied up in chair. Woody Gelman was one of the most legendary pioneers of collecting and was at this time head of the art department at Topps. There is little doubt that sneaking this inside joke into the set was the subject of great office fun for a department that designed products intended to reflect the irreverent culture and humor of the times. This same department came up with many other comic sets that are reminiscent of Mad magazine during this exciting era, including perhaps their greatest and most long-lasting idea: Wacky Packages. Diameter of each lid: 1-7/8 inches. Near Mint to Mint condition! Total: 20 complete sets of 55 lids each for a total of 1,100 lids. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $356
