All Star! - Honus Wagner and the Most Famous Baseball Card Ever, written by Jane Yolen and illustrated by Jim Burke, is a lavishly illustrated book intended for young readers that chronicles the life of Honus Wagner. As a point of reference, Robert Edward Auctions featured the painting used for the central interior illustration from All Star! in our May 2011 auction. The painting, which pictured Honus Wagner posing for the photo used on his T206 tobacco card, appeared as Lot 1316 and realized a final sales price of $11,750. All Star! is one of Burke's most celebrated bodies of work and has received numerous critical accolades. In addition to its being an Oppenheim Gold Award winner, the book's artwork was exhibited in the "Original Art" Juried Exhibition at the Society of Illustrators Museum of American Illustration, which showcases the best picture books of the year. The painting (17 x 19.5 inches) displays an approximate inch-wide border of white tape that was applied during the production process, otherwise in Near Mint condition. This is just one of twenty-one Jim Burke artworks featured in this auction (in ten separate lots), all of which have been consigned directly by the artist.
