Take Me Out to the Ballgame - Original Painting by Jim Burke - Interior Illustration
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $593
Original oil-on-board painting by noted artist Jim Burke used as an interior illustration for the book Take Me Out to the Ballgame (Little, Brown and Company, New York, 2006). Unsigned.
Take Me Out to the Ballgame, written and illustrated by Jim Burke, is an annotated version of the classic baseball song, Take Me Out to the Ballgame, which was written in 1908 by Jack Norwith and Albert Von Tilzer. In a clever adaptation, Burke also concurrently tells the story of "Merkle's Boner," which occurred on September 23, 1908, in a game against the Cubs. In addition to providing interesting historical and anecdotal information regarding the song and "Merkle's Boner," the book also features page after page of stunning baseball illustrations created by Burke that help bring both the lyrics and story to life. This painting, featuring Katie and her beau sitting in the stands cheering on the home team, as a Cracker Jack vendor walks by, was used to illustrate this lyric: Let me ROOT, ROOT, ROOT, for the home team, If they don't win it's a shame." The painting has been framed to slightly larger dimensions and remains in Mint condition. REA previously offered five other original Jim Burke paintings used in Take Me Out to the Ballgame, including the back cover illustration (May 2011, Lot 1315, sold for $6,463) and a two-page illustration of Christy Mathewson on the mound (May 2012, Lot 1134, sold for $4,740). This is just one of twenty-one Jim Burke artworks featured in this auction (in ten separate lots), all of which have been consigned directly by the artist.
