1912 Boston Red Sox Team-Composite Photograph

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,185

Rare and extremely striking team-composite photograph capturing twenty-two members of the 1912 World Champion Boston Red Sox, including Tris Speaker, Harry Hooper, "Smokey Joe" Wood, Duffy Lewis, and player/manager Jake Stahl. The sepia photo captures each player in uniform, either in a fielding pose or with a bat over his shoulder. The text along the base reads "Boston American Baseball Team 1912," and the photographer's copyright notice, "E. J. Reily, Keith's Theatre Bldg.," appears in the lower left corner. The fact that the text does not refer to the club's pennant-winning or World Championship status, probably indicates that the photo was produced either before or during the regular season. (The Red Sox won 105 games and clinched the pennant in mid September.) Composite photographs such as this were quite popular during that era; we are aware of a few different Boston Red Sox examples from 1912, as well as a number of attractive team composites capturing Connie Mack's World Championship Athletics in 1910 and 1911. This is the first example of this particular 1912 Boston Red Sox team composite we have ever handled, and only the second we can recall having seen at auction. The photo (6 x 7.5 inches) displays a few minor surface wrinkles (most of which are only visible when viewed at certain angles), as well as minor indentations as a result of writing on the reverse (of no consequence, mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy). In apparent Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 11.75 x 14.75 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $300+. SOLD FOR $1,185
