2008 Authenticated Ink Penny Card Collection (200) Including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Joe Jackson, and More!
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,067
Fascinating collection of 200 different cards from the Authenticated Ink penny card series, highlighted by more than 130 Hall of Famers, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Mickey Mantle, as well as famous "Black Sox" member Joe Jackson. This series features black-and-white images or sketches of individual players, teams, or stadiums produced on thick cardboard stock measuring 2.5 x 3.5 inches. An authentic Lincoln penny is inserted into each card, with the year of the penny corresponding to the image, ranging from 1867 (the birth of Cy Young) to 2001 (Albert Pujols wins Rookie of the Year). The reverse of each card is blank. We have seen these cards offered on eBay for several years and have always admired their design and the interesting use of a year-specific penny to accent the card. There always appeared to be a healthy demand for the cards as the combination of vintage and modern appealed to a wide array of collectors. The cards also take collectors through a great visual history of the game when presented together in a collection such as this, which has been compiled by a dedicated collector over a period of several years. (The entire collection is actually larger and has been broken up into three separate lots in this auction organized by subject). Though put together for fun, the assemblage of the collection also involved a considerable investment of both time and expense. Keys: Hank Aaron (four), Ty Cobb (five), Joe DiMaggio (five), Lou Gehrig (four), Joe Jackson (five), Willie Mays (four), Jackie Robinson (three), Babe Ruth (eight), Jim Thorpe (three), and Ted Williams (eight). Notable non-Hall of Famers include Abner Doubleday, Eddie Cicotte, Jimmy Claxton, Thurman Munson, Buck Weaver, and modern, not-yet-eligible players, such as Derek Jeter, Albert Pujols, Mariano Rivera, and Ichiro Suzuki. All cards in this collection present as Near Mint or better (some may have almost imperceptible wrinkles on the back that would cause them to technically grade more modestly despite a better appearance). The pennies are almost all bright and clean, with some tarnishing visible on some of the older examples. This is a very substantial collection of these unique and interesting cards that have received little attention but have quietly developed a great following among collectors. It is easy to see why. These cards appear to be offered on eBay only one card at a time, suggesting that a collection of 200 as offered here may be extremely unusual or perhaps even unprecedented. Will these someday be recognized as modern classics? Only time will tell. But it is hard not to appreciate the thought, concept, and substantial construction (incorporating an actual penny in the design of each card) of this unique set devoted to the history of the game. Total: 200 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,067
