1952 Num Num Potato Chips Cleveland Indians PSA-Graded Complete Set (20): #5 Set Registry! (4.40 GPA) - All with Tabs Except Rare Kennedy

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,659

Presented is an exceptional and extremely rare complete set of twenty 1952 Num Num Potato Chips Cleveland Indians cards, each graded and encapsulated by PSA. The fact that this set is complete at all is remarkable, as #16 Bob Kennedy has long been recognized as one of regional-card collecting's most elusive rarities. In the early days of the organized hobby, #16 Kennedy was widely recognized as one of the great rarities in all of card collecting, a modern-day equivalent of Wagner, Plank, or Lajoie. Equally amazing is the fact that all cards in this assembly have the tabs at the bottom fully intact, with the exception of #16 Bob Kennedy (none of which are known to exist with a tab). This set ranks fifth on the PSA Set Registry with an overall GPA of 4.40. Distributed regionally with packages of snacks produced by Num Num Foods of Cleveland, the set features members of the Cleveland Indians exclusively, highlighted by Hall of Famers Larry Doby, Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, Al Lopez, and Early Wynn. Each black-and-white card measures 3.5 x 5.5 inches with the tab intact and features a posed portrait or action image of the player. The one-inch tab at the bottom of each card features the card number and player name along with details about the company's prize offer of an autographed baseball in exchange for a complete set of twenty tabs. This offer undoubtedly explains the short-printing of the #16 Kennedy card (this card was intentionally made rare by Num Num to avoid giving away too many costly prizes) and explains why no Kennedys have been found with a tab (anyone who actually obtained one was able to finally finish their set, and naturally cut the tab as the instructions dictated, along with others, to redeem the autographed ball prize). PSA Grading Composite: Five EX-MT 6: #2, 7, 12, 14, and 17. Eight EX 5: #1, 4 Lemon (HOF), 8, 10, 13, 15, 18 Doby (HOF), and 20 Lopez (HOF). Three VG-EX+ 4.5: #3, 9, and 19. Three VG-EX 4: #5 Feller (HOF), 6 Wynn (HOF), and 11. One VG 3: #16 Kennedy (SP, no tab). This is the first complete set of 1952 Num Num Potato Chip cards that we have ever offered, and it is one of the few complete sets that we have ever seen or heard of with tabs intact (on all but Kennedy). This is a tremendous complete set, in extremely high grade, of this rare regional-card food issue. Total: 20 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,659
