1887 N175 Gypsy Queen Charles Comiskey

Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $1,067

Rare N175 "Small" Gypsy Queen of Hall of Famer Charles Comiskey during his playing days as a member of the St. Louis Browns. N175s are the same size and general format as N172 Old Judge, but with a slightly different design, and advertising for Goodwin's Gypsy Queen brand of tobacco. There has always been some confusion as to the catalog number of the smaller Gypsy Queens (similar in size to N172s and not to be confused with the even rarer large-sized N175 Gypsy Queens, of which nine different cards are known) because the ACC catalog does not distinguish between the two sizes of cards represented by "N175." The offered example of Comiskey has been neatly trimmed down and measures 1-3/8 x 2-1/16 inches (approximately a half-inch short on the bottom). Despite the trimming, the card presents exceptionally well with a flawless surface, outstanding photo contrast, and an entirely clean blank reverse. This is a very attractive sample of a key Hall of Famer from this rare and unusual Old Judge-related nineteenth-century issue, which presents an outstanding opportunity for the collector interested in a superb-looking card at a fraction of the price that a problem-free example would command. Reserve $100. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,067
