1860s to 1880s Baseball-CDV Collection (5) Including Rucker Book Plate Specimen
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,778
Collection of five baseball CDVs, dating from the 1860s to the 1880s, each picturing one or more uniformed players. All measure approximately 2.5 x 4 inches. 1) Five players, all seated, hand colored accents, studio setting, circa 1868. Each of the bib-front jerseys displays a large "K" on the front. No photographer's credit or identification listed. This very CDV was featured as plate specimen number 30 in Mark Rucker's groundbreaking work Baseball Cartes - The First Baseball Cards (self-published, Saratoga Springs, New York, 1988). In his book, Rucker notes that "the only clue for identifying this carte is that it originated in Indiana." Vg. 2) Single player, standing, holding a bat, studio setting, circa 1870s. "Eagle" is lettered on the front of the jersey. No photographer's credit or identification listed. The ink notation "1895" appears on the reverse, but it appears to be earlier. Ex. 3) Single player, standing, holding a bat, studio setting, circa 1870s. Produced by A. D. Harding of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. Ex. 4) Single player, seated, holding a bat, outdoor setting, circa 1870s. Produced by J. A. Rose of Hillsdale, Michigan. The name "Albert Mowrey" is written in pencil on the reverse. Vg-Ex. 5) Single player, standing, holding a bat and ball, studio setting, circa 1880. Great image with extraordinary contrast. The "Spalding" name can be clearly seen on the bat! Produced by A. Horning of Mellette, Dakota. (The Dakota Territory was formally created in 1861 and remained in existence until 1889, when North and South Dakota became states.) Any baseball image from this period originating west of the Mississippi is exceedingly rare, making this an especially desirable nineteenth-century baseball photo. Ex, with gilt borders. Total: 5 CDVs. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $1,778
