1966 Topps Batman Original Card Artwork (Norm Saunders) #15 "Batman In Action"
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $5,036
Presented is the original artwork to card #15 "Batman In Action" from the 1966 Topps Batman card set (Black Bat series). We think all collectors would agree that this is one of the greatest artworks in the entire Batman series and one of Norm Saunders' most incredible trading-card masterpieces! It is not an accident that this is the artwork to a key card in the set. Batman took the world by storm in 1966 with the introduction of the wildly popular Batman television series. Topps jumped on the bandwagon with several series of card sets devoted to the Caped Crusader. This is a tremendous artwork from this classic 1960s card set, featuring a particularly elaborate scene including both Batman and Robin, doing what they do best: fighting evil villains. This artwork is one of the great classics of all Batman artworks, capturing the action and spirit of the entire series. The painting features both primary characters, great action, and of course is the work of the legendary Norm Saunders. The gouache-on-board artwork measures 4-3/4 x 3-1/2 inches. It is interesting to note that the original artwork includes some additional areas around the perimeter which were cropped out by Topps when the card was published. Normal production remnants on reverse of board (and also four pieces of white framing tape); Excellent to Mint condition. This artwork appeared as Lot 1580 in REA's May 2012 auction (at that time selling for $8,888) and has been consigned to this auction directly by the buyer at that sale. It has since been encapsulated by SGC as "Authentic" for protection. This is a most exceptional and rare original artwork, one of the finest in existence, from one of the most popular of all Topps nonsport issues. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,036
