1960s Topps "Stupid Scratch-Offs" Original Artwork Collection (70)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,896

Collection of seventy pieces of original artwork from the "Stupid Scratch-Offs" set produced by Topps in the 1960s. Not much is known about this unusual set. Each card poses a question on the front and hides the answer on the reverse under a scratch-off coating. According to Christopher Benjamin, in his definitive work The Sport Americana Price Guide to the Non-Sports Cards Number 4, no box or wrapper has ever been documented as relating to this set, leading collectors to assume that the set was inserted into fun packs or perhaps produced as a test issue for release along with a regular card set. Whatever the case may be, each black-and-white artwork is drawn in great detail on thin artist's board ranging in size from 5.5 by 6.5 inches to 7 by 9.25 inches. Normal production-related markings and tape remnants are visible on many of the artworks. This collection consists of artwork for the following cards (Q for question side and A for answer side): #1A, 1Q, 2A, 2Q, 3A, 4A, 4Q, 6A, 6Q, 7A, 7Q, 9A, 9Q, 10A, 10Q, 12A, 12Q, 13A, 13Q, 14A, 14Q, 15A, 15Q, 16A,16Q, 17A,17Q, 19A, 19Q, 21A, 21Q, 22A, 22Q, 24A, 24Q, 27A, 28A, 28Q, 29Q, 30Q, 33Q, 34A, 34Q, 35A, 35Q, 36A, 36Q, 37A, 37Q, 38A, 38Q, 39A, 39Q, 40A, 40Q, 41A, 41Q, 42A, 42Q, 43Q, 44A, 44Q, 45A, 45Q, 46A, 46Q, 47A, 47Q, 48A, and 48Q. This is the largest assembly of original artwork from this issue that has ever been offered. REA's Fall 2013 sale featured twenty-eight artworks from this series (appearing as Lot #1116 and realizing $1,896). We believe that the set may have been comprised of a total of forty-eight cards based on the original artwork we have offered between the two lots (a forty-eight card set would result in ninety-six artworks, which is exactly what we have handled, plus two artworks which were image changes for two cards). This is a fascinating collection of original artwork from this very unusual 1960s Topps set. Total: 70 artworks. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,896
