1912 S81 Large Silk Premium "Flags" Collection (8)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $415

Remarkable ultra high-grade collection of eight different "Flags" from the S81 Large Silk tobacco-premium issue from a remarkable find. This group is entirely new to the hobby and has been consigned by a noncollector in the New England area who found these silks in essentially perfect condition (along with the S81 Cobb, Lajoie, Speaker, Jennings, and S81 generals silks also offered in this auction) many years ago and has kept them in his possession until now. The S81 silks could only be obtained by mail, in exchange for twenty Helmar Tobacco gift coupons per silk. The redeemable coupons were inserted one coupon per pack, so it is not surprising that these premiums are extremely rare. The flags featured within this collection are #146 United States, 147 Germany, 150 Mexico, 151 France, 159 Russia, 163 China, 165 Italy, and 169 Turkey. S81 silks are revered both for their beauty and rarity. The offered examples are in extraordinarily high grade, presenting with brilliant, bold colors and crisp, flawless images. Entirely free of any creases or wrinkles. Some very slight fraying at the top and bottom is present, as is almost always the case with large silks. Overall Near Mint condition. Also accompanying each silk is the original paper backing as issued! This is a magnificent collection of silks from one of the rarest and most classic of all 1910-era tobacco-premium issues. Total: 8 silks. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $415
