1880s N457 Moore & Calvi "Playing Cards" Near-Complete Set (45/53)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $711

Near-complete set of forty-five cards (out of fifty-three in the set) from the N457 Moore & Calvi "Playing Cards" series. Issued with the Trumps Long Cut brand during the 1880s, these tobacco insert cards measure 2-5/16 by 3-7/8 inches and feature colorful images of women in various costumes along with the suit, card number, and Trumps Long Cut brand name on the front. An additional company advertisement appears as part of the design on the reverse. This is a very attractive near-complete set as almost all of the cards present as Vg-Ex to Ex on front with bright colors and flawless surfaces. Eight cards have assorted technical issues on the reverse, including writing, glue residue, or small spots of paper loss, and would grade more modestly as a result. Complete or near-complete sets of this issue are very rarely seen, and are naturally of great interest to both tobacco-card and playing-card collectors. This is a particularly attractive collection, presenting at a better level than normally encountered with nineteenth-century tobacco cards. Total: 45 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $711
