1912 S110 Hamilton King Girls - Sports Girls Tobacco Premium Pillowcases (2) Including Only Known Blue Print Example

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,778

Presented is an extremely attractive pair of #8 Hamilton King Girls - Sports Girls pillowcases from the S110 tobacco premiums series. One of the two pillowcases offered here is distinct and noteworthy for its blue printing, noticeable in the number at the bottom right (compared to the normal black) and in the illustrations of the girls. Our consignor, who built one of the finest silk and premium collections ever assembled, has never seen or heard of another example with the same blue printing. The beautiful S110 pillowcases are universally recognized as among the premier tobacco-related display pieces of the era. Each pillowcase is a masterpiece, worthy of being framed and displayed. All S110 pillowcase designs are very substantial, and some are incredibly rare. These colorful display pieces could be obtained only by mail in exchange for coupons packaged with Helmar and Turkey Red tobacco. The S110 set was part of the very same promotion which brought us the classic T3 Turkey Red cabinet-card set, the S81 Large Silk premiums, and the famous L1 leathers tobacco-premium issue. The pillowcase was the ultimate prize of the promotion, requiring the most coupons in exchange (100 coupons were needed to get a pillowcase, which explains why S110s are so rare). Each pillowcase (22.5 x 22.5 inches) has a theme and features images taken from a silk issue of the era. Collectors are very familiar with the baseball S110s (there are two variations), but these sell in the thousands in nice shape, due to the popularity of baseball, yet are no rarer than the other S110s featuring different subjects. The S110 pillowcases offered here feature eight elegant women dressed as participants in eight different sports: basketball, fencing, golf, horse showing, polo, rowing, skating, and yachting. The presence of a basketball on this premium is especially noteworthy as it is among the earliest representations of basketball documented on a card or card-related item. Each pillowcase is exceptionally bright and clean with vibrant colors, crisp images, and minimal areas of fraying along the edges (commonly seen on pillowcases and silks). A few light fold lines are visible on each (these can easily be ironed if desired). Overall Near Mint condition. In terms of condition, the two pillowcases offered here are each among the finest S110 premiums, of any subject, we have ever handled. This is a remarkably clean, very carefully preserved, and phenomenally high-grade pair of pillowcases from one of tobacco collecting's rarest issues. Total: 2 items. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
