1887 N288 Buchner Gold Coin "Police Inspectors & Captains and Chiefs of the Fire Dept." Collection (5)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,067

The 1887 N288 Buchner Policemen cards are among the rarest, most beautifully designed, and interesting of all nineteenth-century tobacco issues. This Buchner Tobacco series, officially titled "One of the Finest," features (as noted on the back of each card) "The Portraits of the Police Inspectors & Captains and Chiefs of the Fire Departments in Uniform." The offered collection consists of five cards from this elusive series: Kenney, Lowery, Smith, Wartz, and Woglom. Each of the cards presents extremely well with bright colors and bold printing, but they are in technically modest condition due to paper loss on the reverse, wear to the corners, and small creases visible on three cards. N288s are rarely found in any significant quantity, and the five cards offered here would be an outstanding addition to any nineteenth-century or nonsport-card collection. Total: 5 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,067
