Circa 1890 Stevengraph "Portraits of Famous Americans" President Grover Cleveland Silks with Rare Allen & Ginter Advertising Mounts (2)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,067

Pair of Grover Cleveland Stevengraph silks, from the "Portraits of Famous Americans" series, one mounted individually and the other mounted together with a Stevengraph silk of his wife. What makes both of these pieces all the more special are the rare Allen & Ginter advertising mounts housing them. These are the first examples for each in an Allen & Ginter mount that we have ever seen, let alone offered (they are normally found in a Stevengraph mount bearing the title of the piece on the front and advertising for other Stevengraph silks on the reverse). Both silk images of Cleveland feature a black-and-white portrait and a colorful red-white-and-blue flag motif at the base. The portrait of Mrs. Cleveland is in black and white. The front of each mount identifies both Grover Cleveland and his wife in print below their respective images, while the top text assures consumers that the company's Richmond Straight Cut No. 1 Cigarettes "Are The Best." Both of the Cleveland silks are in Near Mint condition, while the silk of Mrs. Cleveland displays a tiny amount of foxing (Ex). The first mount (5.5 x 8.75 inches), bearing just the silk of Cleveland, displays light wear, including a tack hole at the top. In Very Good condition. The second mount (9.25 x 6 inches) displays light foxing and minor surface paper loss on the reverse, otherwise in Excellent condition. These are extremely rare variations for each of these silk displays that will likely likely have special appeal to tobacco-memorabilia collectors. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,067
