Presented is an extraordinary and very likely unique one-cent wax wrapper "proof" sheet from the 1962 "Mars Attacks" set. The wrapper bears the name "Attack from Space" rather than "Mars Attacks" we are accustomed to seeing. The reason for the difference is fascinating and also explains its great rarity: This is a very early and extremely significant production proof. Topps quickly dismissed the original set name "Attack From Space" in favor of "Mars Attacks" because, according to co-creator Len Brown, of its potential to appear bolder and more dramatic on packaging. Also of note is the fact that the wrapper is a one-cent variety as Topps opted to instead issue the cards in five-cent wax packs, and no one-cent packs were ever produced. Designed to hold a single card, this wrapper is brilliantly illustrated in green, red, and yellow with the repeating image of a Martian alongside the set name printed on bright glossy stock. The sheet displays five unobtrusive fold lines as well as two small pieces of clear vintage tape in the margin. This wrapper proof sheet from The Fred Walstrom "Mars Attacks" Collection is the actual plate specimen which is featured as a full-page illustration in the Mars Attacks 50th Anniversary Collection book produced by Topps in 2012 (a copy of which accompanies this item). The sheet, which measures approximately 7.75 x 13.75 inches, presents with an overall Excellent to Near Mint display value and has been beautifully framed and matted to total dimensions of 11.75 x 18.75 inches. When this wrapper was offered at auction in 2007, it was purchased by our consignor for $7,199. Whatever its value is today, this is an incredible relic of enormous significance from the creation of the "Mars Attacks" issue which would be a significant highlight in any "Mars Attacks," wrapper, or nonsport-card collection. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from The Topps Vault. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,555
