Collection of five early pieces of production materials relating to the design and production of the 1962 "Mars Attacks" display box by Topps from the earliest stages when it was planned to title the set "Attack From Space/Mars Attacks." Each production positive or artist's board bears the name "Attack from Space" rather than "Mars Attacks" as we are accustomed to seeing. These are very early and extremely significant production proofs. Consideration of the set name "Attack from Space" by Topps was short-lived in favor of "Mars Attacks," which according to co-creator Len Brown was chosen over "Attack from Space" for its potential to appear bolder and more dramatic on packaging. This collection consists of the following: 1) Production Art Board: Camera-ready mixed-media art board from the early "Attack From Space" display box. Produced on thick artist's board measuring 10-11/16 x 8-5/16 inches, multiple versions of the set name have been designed in paste-up and hand-drawn form. Pencil notations concerning sizing and positioning are visible throughout. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from The Topps Vault. 2) Production Stat Positive: Produced from the mixed-media artwork offered above, this production stat positive, which measures approximately 6-7/16 x 4-1/4 inches, was used by Topps to review different options for the "Attack From Space" display box. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from The Topps Vault.3) Production Art Board: Camera-ready mixed-media art board from the early "Attack From Space" display box. Produced on thick artist's board measuring 10-11/16 x 8-5/16 inches, the set name and price have been designed in paste-up and hand-drawn form. Pencil notations concerning sizing and positioning are visible throughout. Matted to dimensions of 8.5 x 10.5 inches. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from The Topps Vault. 4) Production Stat Positive: Measuring 3.5 x 5 inches, this positive is printed on a black background to accentuate the text and combines the "Attack From Space" set name and one-cent price. Light sizing notations are visible in the background. 5) Production Stat Positive: Once Topps decided on the style of text to use on the display box, additional production stat positives were created. Designed with a black background so that the text would appear white (as on the display box), this positive has been secured by means of vintage masking tape on the reverse to a smaller positive created for the price that would be printed on the box. Measuring approximately 6.5 x 4 inches at its widest points, the positive is die-cut along the right side to allow for the joining of the two positives. A strip of masking tape at top contains sizing notations. This is a fascinating collection of unique early production-related materials that would be a significant addition to any "Mars Attacks," nonsport, or display-box collection. Total: 5 items. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $593
