Collection of six early pieces of production material relating to the display box used for the classic "Mars Attacks" set issued by Topps in 1962. Topps designed the "Mars Attacks" display box to capture the attention of youngsters at candy stores, as well as to generate interest, intrigue, and sales. The unique production materials offered in this collection give insight into how Topps arrived at combining all the different elements needed to achieve the intended level of success. This collection consists of the following: 1) Original Pencil Sketch: Topps eventually decided that the "Attack From Space" name should be replaced with something more dramatic, thus paving the way for the "Mars Attacks" set known today. This original pencil sketch is an early drawing executed on thin wax paper. "Mars Attacks" is sketched in big letters with other markings underneath, perhaps done as a means of blocking out where certain other elements would appear on the display box. Excellent display value with scattered wrinkling to the thin paper, light vintage tape marks, and a piece of the lower left corner missing. 2) Original Artwork: Black-ink artwork executed on thin cardboard stock featuring two different sizes and versions of "Mars Attacks" title text and a "5ยข" price. This early production artwork was used for title text to appear on five-cent display boxes and wax packs. The "Attack" portion of the larger drawing on top (intended for the display boxes) has been neatly cut out (done as part of the production process, during which artists would routinely cut and paste elements together to form a final artwork). Light, unobtrusive pencil marks are visible on the drawing. 3-6) Production Positives: Outstanding group of production positives used in the early stages of display-box production. Each positive is for one element of the display box, including the images used on the side panels which depict Martians leading an attack on Earth. One positive, measuring 5.25 x 8 inches, features six Martians arranged in two rows of three. Light production notations are visible in the left margin. A second positive, measuring 4-1/4 x 7-3/8 inches, features the scene of Earth's destruction, with billowing smoke and invading spaceships in the background. The Martian which would appear leading the charge on the final display box has been cut from this positive. Production notations appear on the bottom and right borders. The final two positives measure 4.5 x 7 and 5-1/4 x 6-7/8 inches, respectively, and feature text for "Space Adventure Bubble Gum" which would appear on both the top and side panels of the final display box. Near Mint overall condition. This is a significant collection of early production-related material that would be outstanding additions to any "Mars Attacks," nonsport, or display-box collection. Each of the six items in this lot are accompanied by a separate Certificate of Authenticity from The Topps Vault. Total: 6 items. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $474
