Presented is an extraordinarily significant extreme rarity relating to "Mars Attacks": an original salesman advertising sheet for Topps' popular "Mars Attacks" set. This advertising sheet from The Fred Walstrom "Mars Attacks" Collection is the actual plate specimen which is featured as a full-page illustration in the Mars Attacks 50th Anniversary Collection book produced by Topps in 2012 (a copy of which accompanies this item). The "Mars Attacks" set is unparalleled in the presentation of its colorful, detailed artwork and gruesome graphics. Parents were up in arms upon viewing the gore and mayhem depicted by this scary science fiction set, which tells the story of Martians attacking planet Earth, but kids couldn't get enough of them. This advertising sheet, which measures 10 by 11.25 inches, was designed to capture the attention of store owners in 1962 as Topps salesmen blanketed the country looking to stock their new product on as many shelves as possible. Designed with a bright purple background, the display features captivating white text, along with an illustration of two Martians, and a large starburst in the area, which was likely where pricing information was presented or perhaps a sample card would be positioned. The offered example is virtually pristine, showing only a small piece of vintage tape in the lower right corner (this can easily be masked in a display with a piece of purple paper). The reverse is blank and displays another piece of vintage tape which has been placed to repair an almost imperceptible 1.25-inch cut in the sheet. When this sheet was last offered at public auction in 2002, it was described as originating from the personal collection of Topps executive Woody Gelman. Also accompanying this advertising sheet are three sets of early production "proofs" for smaller advertising pieces designed in a similar style. Two sets each consist of a piece of thin white cardboard with green Martians in the upper right corner and "for the sales adventure of a lifetime. . ." printed alongside and a thin micrometal plate with the same design printed in black. These pieces measure approximately 3.75 x 4.5 inches for the cardboard and 3.75 x 5.25 inches for the micrometal. The third set is larger in size, measuring 3.75 x 7 inches. It features the same design as the previous two sets but has "Space Adventure Bubble Gum" printed along the top and a starburst area similar to the larger sheet offered in this lot. This is an extremely rare and important collection of "Mars Attacks" memorabilia, including the only example we have ever seen of this salesman's sheet, which be a noteworthy addition to any "Mars Attacks" or nonsport advertising collection. Total: 7 items. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $356
