Presented is one of the rarest of all nonsport wax packs and a "Holy Grail" for all "Mars Attacks" collectors. This complete unopened five-cent wax pack is the only known surviving example in the entire collecting world! This is one of the great prizes of The Fred Walstrom "Mars Attacks" Collection. Fred Walstrom remembers collecting these cards as a child in 1962 and states that this is the only wax pack he has seen in decades of searching since the days of opening up packs on the playground as a ten year old. While no one knows exactly why unopened packs of this very popular issue are so difficult to find, there is unanimous agreement that the offered example is incredibly rare and possibly unique. Its existence was so miraculous that Topps elected to use this very pack extensively in its Mars Attacks 50th Anniversary Collection produced in 2012 (a copy of which accompanies this item). The offered pack is the actual plate specimen which Topps used to produce the back dust jacket for the book as well as two full-page interior illustrations. We have seen only a few five-cent display boxes in all our years, each of which was designed to house twenty-four packs. One would think that somewhere, somehow a few unopened packs would have survived, and perhaps someday others will surface, but we have never heard or seen another, and, as noted, even Topps did not have one in its files and had to borrow this very pack to illustrate the cover of the "Mars Attacks" book. Topps designed the "Mars Attacks" packaging to capture the attention of youngsters at candy stores, as well as to generate interest, intrigue, and sales. It succeeded on all levels. The bright yellow pack features the set name and price in big bold red letters. "Space Adventure Bubble Gum" printed directly below in black. A weapon-wielding Martian is illustrated at the bottom with invading spaceships pictured alongside. The reverse features another Martian along with promises of what was in store for youngsters when they opened up the pack: "SEE FLYING SAUCERS DESTROY EARTH'S LARGEST CITIES!/SEE GIANT INSECTS CRUSH EVERYTHING IN THEIR PATH!/SEE EARTH'S ARMIES ON MARS FIGHTING AGAINST SUPER-WEAPONS!" Five cards were housed inside each pack along with a stick of bubble gum. Ideally, the one card visible through the reverse of the pack is #21 "Prize Captive," one of the most iconic images associated with the "Mars Attacks" set. The offered pack is in outstanding condition with brilliant colors and very little handling wear. A 1.5-inch tear, created by the sliding stick of gum, is present along the right edge. The reverse is tightly sealed with natural roller marks visible. Overall Excellent appearance with tremendous display value. This extremely impressive and possibly unique surviving example of the rare five-cent "Mars Attacks" wax pack would make a worthy addition to any world-class "Mars Attacks," nonsport, or unopened-pack collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $11,850
