1962 Topps "Mars Attacks" Five-Cent Wax Pack Wrapper "Proof"

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,185

To read more about the Fred Walstrom "Mars Attacks" Collection, please click here.

Original unused five-cent wax wrapper "proof" from the classic "Mars Attacks" series. This wrapper obviously was never used in packaging, and was saved by Topps or the printer as a sample or file copy. This rare form, of course, is the ideal for this all-time classic wrapper. The "Mars Attacks" set is unparalleled in the presentation of its colorful, detailed artwork and gruesome graphics. Parents were up in arms upon viewing the gore and mayhem depicted by this scary science fiction set, which tells the story of Martians attacking planet Earth, but kids couldn't get enough of them. The packaging associated with the cards, including wax packs and display boxes, was equally as colorful and captivating. Presented here is an original unfolded "proof" five-cent wax wrapper which features a bright yellow front with the set name and price boldly printed in red. "Space Adventure Bubble Gum" is underneath in black, and a large green Martian is illustrated in the lower right with small spacecraft ominously positioned next to him. The left side panel features additional bold yellow and red printing outlining the story of the set as told by the fifty-five cards ("Flying saucers destroy Earth's largest cities!" and "Giant insects crush everything in their path!"). The right side panel features the listing of contents and ingredients as well as the manufacturing company's information (Topps opted to print a fictitious company, Bubbles, Inc., to deflect any backlash over the gruesome cards). This wax wrapper from The Fred Walstrom "Mars Attacks" Collection is the actual plate specimen which is featured as a full-page illustration in the Mars Attacks 50th Anniversary Collection book produced by Topps in 2012 (a copy of which accompanies this item). Overall Near Mint condition (unfolded) with exceptionally vibrant colors. This is an outstanding original wax wrapper from this very popular set, ideal for display, and one that would be a significant addition to any "Mars Attacks," wrapper, or nonsport collection. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,185
