Extremely significant early production paste-up board relating to "Mars Attacks" card-back development. This is the original "artwork" used by the Topps art department to devise exactly how the reverse of all fifty-five cards in the classic "Mars Attacks" set would appear. Produced on thick artist's board, which measures 5.25 x 6.75 inches, artists sketched a 2.5 x 3.5 inch space to replicate the size of an issued card and then blocked out several elements of the reverse. In the top left, a small spaceship is sketched to hold the card number. In the lower left, "Bubbles, Inc." and "Prtd. In U.S.A." have been pasted above a blacked out arrow which was designed to point readers to the next card. The tagline "Collect The Set Of 55 Cards" is pasted underneath. In the bottom right, a box is blacked out to leave space for the scene depicted on the next card. Crop marks, intended to help with sizing for the art department, are visible at the four corners of the card back. Underneath, pencil notations read "GET SIZE EXACT!/Leave on crop marks!/1 line cut-micrometal/same size/blocked flush," which are messages intended for those involved in the next stage of the process. The protective paper cover sheet, marked "Mars Attacks back grids" accompanies and has separated from the artist's board over the years. Also included are six card-size micrometal printing plates which are final full-printed versions of the backs of cards #2, 10, 13, 22, 27, and 51. These plates were cut down from a larger sheet and used as part of the production process. The plates for cards #2, 13, and 22 are framed and matted side by side in a three-row display featuring issued cards at top and bottom which show the front and back of the final cards. Two final-issue cards for #10, 27, and 51 also accompany so that a similar display can be created as does a blank-back black-and-white proof for card #13 (encapsulated by GAI as "Authentic"). This is a fascinating collection of unique early production-related materials that would be a significant addition to any "Mars Attacks," nonsport, or card-production collection. A Certificate of Authenticity from The Topps Vault accompanies the paste-up board. Total: 20 items (paste-up board, six printing plates, twelve final issue cards, and one black-and-white proof). Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $948
