1938 The Three Stooges Mutts to You One-Sheet Linen-Backed Movie Poster

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $9,480

One-sheet movie poster issued for the 1938 Three Stooges short Mutts to You. This was the Stooges' thirty-fourth short and their penultimate film of 1938. The plot involves the trio as dog groomers who mistakenly find a baby on a doorstep that they think is abandoned, not knowing that the mother had locked herself out of the house and was around back looking for a spare key. Later, they are mistaken for the baby's kidnappers. To hide from the police, Curly has to dress up as a woman and pretend he's the baby's mother. This film is notable for the fact that it was directed and produced by legendary silent-screen comedian Charley Chase. Three Stooges one-sheets dating from the team's "golden age" (1934-1947; those featuring Curly as part of the trio) are not only the most desirable of all paper from their films, but also the rarest. Prior to this extraordinary offering by REA (which will be conducted over a number of auctions), we have seen fewer than twenty different-titled Three Stooges one-sheets from this early era offered at public auction in the past fifteen years. Those dating from the 1930s are even more elusive, as we cannot recall having seen more than twelve different-titled Stooges one-sheets from that decade. To put those numbers in proper perspective, it should be noted that the Stooges starred in ninety-seven shorts total during that fourteen-year period and forty-three between the years 1934 and 1939. The poster (27 x 41 inches) is linen-backed, during which process there was restoration to pin holes in each corner, minor edge tears, and two small tears in the lower left corner, as well as the standard touch ups along the fold lines. Excellent to Mint in appearance and a true condition rarity for a 1930s Stooges poster. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $9,480
