Holsten's Menu Used in the Famous Final Episode of The Sopranos and Menu Signed by James Gandolfini
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,185
The final episode of The Sopranos was one of the most anticipated events in television history and will forever be remembered for its enigmatic "blackout" ending. The episode's final scene took place at Holsten's, a restaurant/ice cream parlor located in Bloomfield, New Jersey (not too far from Robert Edward Auctions). Offered here is one of the original Holsten's menus used in the final episode of The Sopranos. (Note: The final scene, and this very menu, can be viewed on YouTube at this web address: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnT7nYbCSvM). The menu is accompanied by a signed LOA from Stephen Martinique, the son of one of the owners of the restaurant, attesting to its provenance. In his letter, which is handwritten on a Holsten's invoice, dated July 10, 2007, he writes, in full:
This menu is one of three original menus used during the filming of the final scene of the Sopranos on March 22, 2007. There were a total of five original menus being used on the table during the different takes of the final scene. This menu along with two others were used and seen on the Sopranos. At the end of the shoot that night, this menu and the other two were laying out on the table where the family ate their last meal. As the son of one of the owners and an extra in the last scene, I was present at Holsten's and able to obtain these menus. This is an authentic item that will forever be in television history.
This is the second Holsten's menu from the final scene of The Sopranos that REA has handled. The first appeared as Lot 1620 in our May 2008 auction, where it realized a final price of $1,175. Both that earlier menu and the offered example originate from the same consignor, who bought them on eBay shortly after the final scene was shot in 2007. REA even independently contacted the owners of Holsten's in 2008, and they verified the sale and authenticity of the menus sold on eBay at the time. The fold-over menu (8.5 x 11 inches) features a photo of the storefront on the cover and displays a few light food stains throughout (mainly on the reverse). In Excellent condition overall. Accompanying the menu is a second, smaller, Holsten's takeout menu that has been signed on the front in blue Sharpie (grading "10") by series star James Gandolfini. The fold-over menu (7 x 8.5 inches) remains in Near Mint condition. Total: 2 items (final scene menu and takeout menu signed by Gandolfini). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,185
