Taxi Driver Academy Award Certificate of Nomination for Best Picture of 1976
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,778
Official "Certificate of Nomination for Award," issued by The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in the category of Best Picture, for the classic 1976 film Taxi Driver. The certificate was presented to the producers of the film, Michael and Julia Phillips, and has been signed by both the president (Walter Mirisch) and secretary of the Academy. Taxi Driver, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert DeNiro, is considered by both critics and fans as one of the finest films ever made. Ironically, it did not win Best Picture in 1976, losing on Oscar night to Rocky. However, it has stood the test of time and is ranked number 47 in the American Film Institute's list of 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time (thirty-one spots above Rocky). Given the complete unavailability of Oscars, awards such as this are often the next-best alternative for collectors wishing to own a piece of Hollywood history. In the case of Taxi Driver, which did not win an Oscar, this certificate represents the ONLY official recognition the film ever received from the Academy in the category of Best Picture, thereby making it one of the most significant pieces extant relating to Scorsese's cinematic masterpiece. This award has been offered in the collecting world once before. It was purchased by our consignor at auction in 2003 for $2,087. The award, which was produced by Perma Plaque, features the certificate mounted on wood with a protective covering and measures 12 x 13.5 x .5 inches. In Excellent to Mint condition overall, displaying just normal handling wear. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,778
