Andrew Johnson and William Taft Cut Signatures in Framed Displays (2)

Pair of cut signatures, each housed in a framed display, by Andrew Johnson and Howard Taft, respectively. 1) Cut signature of Andrew Johnson (1808-1875), seventeenth President of the United States. Johnson's black-ink signature (grading "8") appears upon a segment of what appears to be a military commission, dated May 23, 1865. The irregularly trimmed sheet (6 x 6.5 inches) displays a number of folds and is otherwise in Excellent condition. Matted and framed together with an engraving (6 x 9.5 inches) of Johnson to total dimensions of 10 x 21 inches. 2) Cut signature of William Taft (1857-1930), twenty-seventh President of the United States. Taft has inscribed the cut, taken from a piece of official White House stationery, in black ink "M. C. Hargrove/With best wishes/Sincerely yours/Wm. H. Taft." The date, "July 24th 1913" is written to the left of his signature. Both the text and signature grade "9/10." The cut (4 x 2.5 inches) is in Excellent to Mint condition. Matted and framed together with a photo (5 x 6.75 inches) of Taft to total dimensions of 9.5 x 15.5 inches. Total: 2 items. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $711
