Extraordinary Early "Buffalo Bill" Cody Cabinet Photo by Rockwood

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,963

Early cabinet photo of "Buffalo Bill" Cody produced by noted New York photographer George Rockwood. The gorgeous studio photo captures Cody posed seated, dressed in his traditional Western buckskin outfit and hat. Rockwood's name and studio address appear in gilt lettering along the base of the mount. A pencil notation on the reverse reads "Wm. F. Cody/Buffalo Bill/1875." This is one of the earliest Buffalo Bill cabinet photos we have seen and dates well before he founded his famous "Wild West" show, which toured both in the United States and abroad, for more than twenty years beginning in 1883. As a point of reference, this is one of only a few examples of this particular Buffalo Bill cabinet photo we have seen, and the first we have offered. The only other example we can recall seeing at public sale appeared in Cowan's Auctions' 2006 Spring Americana sale, where it realized a final price of $4,025. The offered photo remains in Near Mint condition, while the mount (4.25 x 6.5 inches) displays only the slightest amount of edge and corner wear. In Excellent to Mint condition overall, and probably as fine an example as one could hope to find. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,963
