Circa 1858 James Garfield Cut Signature
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $296
Cut-signature example of James A. Garfield (1831-1881), twentieth President of the United States. Garfield's black fountain-pen inscription (grading "10") has been scripted on a small sheet of white paper (4.75 x 2.25 inches) and reads "J. A. Garfield/Hiram/Ohio." Garfield was a teacher and later principal at the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute (later named Hiram College) in Hiram, Ohio, between the years 1856 and 1860. Given that fact, this sheet probably dates from that five-year period. Garfield was elected President in 1881, but his Presidency only lasted 200 days before he was assassinated by Charles J. Guiteau. The cut, which is in Excellent condition, has been inadvertently matted and framed together with a photographic likeness of Benjamin Harrison to total dimensions of 9.25 x 13.5 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $296
