1860 Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin Campaign Ferrotype
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,304
Presented is an exceptional example of one of the great classics of political-campaign collecting: A double-sided Abraham Lincoln/Hannibal Hamlin ferrotype, mounted in a circular gold-colored brass platform (.75 inches in diamater), dating from the 1860 presidential campaign. On each side the candidate's name ("Abraham Lincoln" and "Hannibal Hamlin") appears on the surrounding rim above his portrait, with the date ("1860") below. A prepunched hole at the top allows for insertion of a ribbon or thread so the ferrotype could be displayed on a lapel. If one were a supporter of the Lincoln-Hamlin ticket in 1860, wearing this ferrotype on your lapel made that clear. Ferrotypes such as these were among the earliest political campaign pins. In our opinion, they also represent one of the best values in all of historic Americana collectibles. It's hard for us to believe that an original campaign pin of Abraham Lincoln, from his first Presidential run no less, can often (but not always; there are many exceptions!) be had for hundreds, as opposed to thousands, of dollars, but that is the case at present, though we believe this will be a distant memory someday. In the early 1980s, almost all Lincoln ferrotypes were worth approximately $200 each. Today, most of these early ferrotypes in top shape are worth (depending on design and condition) close to or more than $1,000. They looked like a bargain to us in the early 1980s, and they still look like a bargain to us! (Please note: anyone interested in political collectibles should consider joining the APIC. Contact REA for info.) This is a fine example of what advanced political-campaign collectors would consider the standard classic traditional style 1860 Lincoln-Hamlin double-sided campaign ferrotype. While these are rare, they are seen regularly by advanced collectors, but, frankly, by few others. In our experience, when other types of collectors that are interested in American history actually see these early campaign items, and are given the opportunity to know they exist, they go wild! It is a privilege for REA to offer any quality Lincoln ferrotype because it is a desirable auction lot, but it is an even greater privilege for us to have the opportunity to expose more collectors to the field of political collecting simply by offering a quality item such as this that is relatively affordable, an outstanding collecting value, and has such a universal appeal. The Lincoln ferrotype side is slightly darker in tone than Hamlin's, both display some crazing and a few very light scratches, and there is a hint of tarnishing to the rim, but as can easily be seen, the overall appearance is Excellent. This is an outstanding classic original 1860 Lincoln-Hamlin campaign ferrotype that is far superior to those normally encountered and would be a prize in any collection. Reserve $400.
