1909 James Jeffries Playing Cards Complete Set in Original Box

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,185

Issued in 1909 by the W. P. Jeffries Company of Los Angeles, California, the "James J. Jeffries Championship Souvenir Playing Cards" set features fifty-four cards with extremely striking images of famous boxers (Sullivan, Johnson, Corbett, Attell, Jeffries, Sharkey, Fitzsimmons, etc.) and fight scenes. The backs feature an image of heavyweight champion James Jeffries dressed in street clothes. Offered is a complete 53-card set in virtually flawless condition, Nr/Mt or better overall. The set is accompanied by the original box (Vg), instruction booklet (Vg), and the "title" card (Nr/Mt). All the cards are bright, crisp, and clean, having been beautifully preserved in their original box over the years. The card backs are a vibrant red color and display virtually flawless fragile borders. In any condition, this set represents one of the most extraordinary values in vintage boxing-card collecting. Every once in a while (far less frequently in recent years!) a virtually perfect deck surfaces from an attic or estate. When one does, as is the case here, it is a significant collecting opportunity. This is a spectacular high-grade complete set of one of the most substantial and well-produced of all early boxing-card issues. Total: 56 items (complete set of 53 cards, original box, instruction booklet, and "title" card). Reserve $400. Estimate $800+. SOLD FOR $1,185
