1973 Joe Frazier vs. George Forman Onsite Fight Poster

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $474

Scarce onsite poster for the heavyweight title bout between champion Joe Frazier and George Foreman, held at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, on January 22, 1973. The colorful poster, which bills the bout as the "The Sunshine Showdown," features images of both fighters, while the text makes note of each fighter's "Unbeaten" status. In what was considered an upset at the time, Foreman defeated Frazier by knockout in the second round. But what was even more shocking was Foreman's complete annihilation of Frazier. Foreman sent Frazier to the canvas six times, with each knock down accompanied by announcer Howard Cosell's famous call of "Down goes Frazier. Down goes Frazier." Because this fight was held outside the United States, few posters made it back home, resulting in its rarity today. This is the first example we have ever offered and we cannot recall having seen many others over the years. The poster (22 x 27.5 inches), printed on paper stock, is lightly toned and displays a few small tears along the left border that in no way detract from its overall Excellent appearance. It should be noted that the poster has been stored rolled and will be shipped in a tube. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $474
