Extremely Unusual and Unique 1988 Muhammad Ali Signed Photo
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,067
This Muhammad Ali signed photo, which pictures him in his penultimate fight against Larry Holmes, is unique because of Ali's philosophical take on the bout. Inscribing the photo in black marker along the length of the white rope, Ali has written "Muhammad Ali - Larry Did Not Win, Time Did." Both the signature and inscription are boldly scripted and grade "10." The photo also features a secretarial Larry Holmes signature in silver paint pen. A date along the bottom border (written by an unknown hand in black marker) reads "3-26-88." Ali suffered the worst defeat of his career at the hands of heavyweight champion Larry Holmes on October 2, 1980. Holmes battered a defenseless Ali for eleven rounds before trainer Angelo Dundee mercifully stopped the fight on behalf of his fighter. Obviously, as he noted here, Ali felt had he been younger, the result would have been very different. The photo (10 x 8 inches) displays light pencil lines along the entire front border and tape residue along reverse edges, both of which are the result of it having once been matted and framed; it is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,067
