1887 N174 Old Judge Boxers Collection (7) Including John L. Sullivan
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,304
Collection of seven extraordinarily rare nineteenth-century boxing tobacco cards. N174 Old Judges are very similar to the N172 Old Judge baseball series, but considerably rarer (and, of course, feature boxers). These were the only nineteenth-century items found in a very advanced card collection (assembled decades ago), spanning the years from the early 1900s to the 1970s, consigned to this auction. The collection consists of the following: Jack Burke, George LaBlanche, two Jack McAuliffe (one scripted last name only and one printed full name, both hands at ready pose), Charlie Mitchell, John L. Sullivan (formal attire), and Tommy Warren. All cards are bright and crisp with outstanding contrast and present as Gd to Vg, but would technically grade Pr due to square paper remnants in the center of the blank reverses from mounting. The Charlie Mitchell card has the bottom ad clipped off. This is a very attractive group of cards from this substantial and rare nineteenth-century tobacco issue. Total: 7 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,304
