1910-1911 Sweet Caporal Postcard #40 Rocket Power

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,252

Incredibly rare sample card from the 1910-1911 Sweet Caporal Postcard hockey set featuring Montreal Canadiens defenseman Rocket Power. Sweet Caporal Postcards are considered by serious hockey-card collectors to be one of the premier sets ever produced and are highly prized for their extreme rarity, distinctive style, and striking images. Some collectors can go an entire lifetime without seeing a sample from this set in person. We have never offered a single example prior to this auction. A total of forty-five real-photo postcards comprise a complete set and feature "Prominent Canadian Hockey Players" from the five franchises of the National Hockey Association, the precursor to the National Hockey League which we know today. The majority of the players are pictured in a portrait pose while some are depicted in a full-body shot with their hockey equipment. The surface of each postcard is glossy and has been retouched, as part of production, to add team logos, which gives the cards a natural sheen. All cards were produced in Great Britain for distribution in Canada by Imperial Tobacco, the same company that produced the iconic C55 and C56 hockey-card sets. Population data, however, suggests that the postcards are approximately one-hundred times rarer than the smaller tobacco cards which parallel the postcard issue. The offered card of Rocket Power shows him in a striking portrait pose. Graded and encapsulated POOR 10 by SGC (due to writing and postmarking on the reverse), this card has a much better appearance with four strong corners (a little more wear to the top two), flawless borders which are so easily chipped, and a near-perfect surface with only a small crack near the top to the delicate stock. Accompanying this postcard is Power's C55 Imperial Tobacco card, #40, in VG condition, which allows for a superb matched-pair display of these two early hockey cards. Total: 2 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,252
