1910-1911 Sweet Caporal Postcard #25 Odie Cleghorn
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,666
Incredibly rare sample card from the 1910-1911 Sweet Caporal Postcard hockey set featuring Renfrew Creamery Kings forward Odie Cleghorn. Sweet Caporal Postcards are considered by serious hockey-card collectors to be one of the premier sets ever produced and are coveted for their extreme rarity, distinctive style, and striking images. Some collectors can go an entire lifetime without seeing a sample from this set in person. We have never offered a single example prior to this auction. A total of forty-five real-photo postcards comprise a complete set and feature "Prominent Canadian Hockey Players" from the five franchises of the National Hockey Association, the precursor to the National Hockey League which we know today. The majority of the players are pictured in a portrait pose while some are depicted in a full-body shot with their hockey equipment. The surface of each postcard is glossy and has been retouched, as part of production, to add team logos, which gives the cards a natural sheen. All cards were produced in Great Britain for distribution in Canada by Imperial Tobacco, the same company that produced the iconic C55 and C56 hockey-card sets. Population data suggests, however, that the postcards are approximately one-hundred times rarer than the smaller tobacco cards which parallel the postcard issue. The offered card of Odie Cleghorn shows him in a striking portrait pose. This is a very attractive example, displaying no writing or postmarking. Technically in VG condition due to light wrinkling in the bottom half of the front and back, the postcard presents at a much better level with even wear to the corners and flawless borders. A few, unobtrusive ink spots are visible on the front. Clean reverse. An outstanding opportunity to add this extremely desirable sample to any type-card or advanced hockey-card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,666
