1974-1975 "Pistol Pete" Maravich New Orleans Jazz Warm-Up Jacket - Jazz Inaugural Season

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,555

New Orleans Jazz warm-up jacket worn by Hall of Fame guard "Pistol Pete" Maravich during the club's inaugural 1974-1975 season. Accompanied by an LOA from MEARS that certifies the garment as "Authentic" (MEARS does not grade pants, caps, or warm-up garments). The flamboyant color scheme of this jacket, with its purple body, green and white trim, and purple-and-gold checkered sleeves, epitomized the pro-basketball style in vogue during the 1970s. The button-down jacket is lettered "New Orleans Jazz" on the front and "Maravich" on the reverse, with all letters appliqu├ęd in gold tackle twill. A "Sand-Knit 44" label appears in the collar. Moderate wear is displayed throughout. As MEARS notes in its accompanying letter, the dating of this garment was based largely on the style of the Sand-Knit label, which was last used consistently in 1974. Obviously, this jacket cannot date prior to 1974 (the team did not exist prior to the 1974 season), so the fact the company's tagging began to change in 1975 seems to pinpoint the year to 1974. Furthermore, MEARS states that it was unable to find a photo of any New Orleans Jazz player wearing a warm-up jacket during the 1974 season. However, photo examples of the club's warm-up jackets between the years 1975 and 1978 were found, but none of those matched the offered jacket. Therefore, by elimination, 1974 appears to be the only year from which this jacket can date. Maravich was traded from the Atlanta Falcons to the Jazz prior to the 1974-1975 season. New Orleans was desperate for an impact player during its inaugural season and Maravich, who was already a legend after having starred at LSU for three seasons, fit the bill perfectly. Although "The Pistol" enjoyed four outstanding years with Atlanta, it was with New Orleans between the years 1974 and 1979 that Maravich established himself as one of the NBA's most electrifying players. Among his many achievements and honors during that time were one scoring title (1976/1977), two All NBA First Team selections, and two All NBA Second Team selections. Maravich retired in 1980 and in 1987 he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Maravich game-used garments in general are extremely rare, making this piece, dating from his first year with New Orleans, of all the greater note. LOA from Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $3,555
