1905 Chicago Maroons Real-Photo Postcard with Amos Alonzo Stagg!

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,067

Real-photo postcard picturing legendary football coach Amos Alonzo Stagg (lower right) posing together with the members of his 1905 National Championship football team, the University of Chicago Maroons. The printed caption along the base reads "University of Chicago Football Squad 1905," with someone later adding the black-ink scripted notation "Champion," in front of it. The photographer's credit, "Photo. Co. of Am. Chicago," appears in the lower right corner. Stagg was both a standout college football player (Yale) and coach, as well as an innovator in a number of other sports, including basketball, where he was largely responsible for making it a five-player sport. His accomplishments in both football and basketball later earned him inaugural induction into both the College Football Hall of Fame (1951) and Basketball Hall of Fame (1959). His 1905 Maroons were not only his first unbeaten and untied team (they finished 10-0), but his first recognized National Championship club as well. This is an extremely rare example of this particular real-photo postcard and the first we have ever encountered. The postcard (5.5 x 3.25 inches), which has been neither addressed nor mailed, has a tiny crease in the lower right corner and, aside from writing on the front, is in Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,067
