1948 Topps "Magic Photos" Boxing Champions Complete Set (24): #3 PSA Set Registry! (5.35 GPA)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $593
Presented is an outstanding complete set of the twenty-four boxing subjects from the Topps "Magic Photos" set. Currently ranked third on the PSA Set Registry, this assembly has a weighted GPA of 5.35. This fascinating set , issued by Topps in 1948, is actually a subset of Topps' first card issue (which features a total of 252 cards organized by subject in subsets ranging from sports stars to movie stars). These "self-developing" cards (7/8 x 1-7/16 inches) were called "Magic Photos" because when issued they had blank fronts, which, when youngsters exposed to the sun, revealed sepia photos. The self-developing process produced very inconsistent results, but the majority of the cards offered here have pleasing contrast and detail. PSA Grading Composite: Three NM 7: #11A Sharkey, 18A, and 20A. Eight EX-MT 6: #1A, 4A, 9A Tunney, 10A Schmeling, 21A, 22A, 23A, and 24A. Eight EX 5: #2A Sullivan, 3A Corbett, 5A Jeffries, 7A, 8A Dempsey, 12A, 13A, and 15A Louis. One VG-EX+ 4.5: #14A. Three VG-EX 4: #6A Johnson, 16A, and 17A. One VG 3: #19A Robinson. This is an attractive complete set of all twenty-four boxers from this scarce and extremely significant early Topps issue, which has always been somewhat overlooked by collectors, perhaps because of its unusual self-developing design and small dimensions. Total: 24 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $593
