1911 T9 Turkey Red Boxing Cabinets Complete PSA-Graded Set Minus 1 (25 of 26)

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $7,703

Extraordinary high-grade complete set (minus one) of twenty-five different cards from the classic T9 Turkey Red boxing series, including Jack Johnson, Jim Jeffries, and Abe Attell (who is credited with being the middleman between the gamblers and players involved in the "fix" of the 1919 World Series). This set is missing only #53 Ad Wolgast for completion. Issued in conjunction with the T3 Turkey Red baseball series, the T9 boxing set (#51-76) features twenty-six champion boxers of the day, and is widely considered the most attractive and most desirable of all boxing issues. This is one of the finest sets of T9 Turkey Red Boxers ever assembled! This set is ranked seventh on the PSA Set Registry and boasts an impressive GPA of 4.53. All twenty-five cards have been graded and encapsulated by PSA. T9s have long been recognized as one of the most popular and beautiful of all boxing cards, and are rarely offered as a complete or near-complete set. They are also very condition-sensitive. This complete set has been painstakingly assembled, with constant upgrading, and with a tremendous investment in time, effort, and expense by an extremely dedicated collector over a period of many years. PSA Grading Composite: Two EX+ 5.5: #62 and 64 Papke. Ten EX 5: #52 Attell, 57 Nelson, 58 McFarland, 59, 65 Langford, 67 Ketchel (It is fascinating to note that this card was issued a year after his passing. Ketchel was murdered in 1910 while in training for a scheduled bout against Jack Johnson. The premium offer on the back of the T9 Ketchel, as listed at the bottom of the reverse of the card, expires June 30, 1911.), 68 Jeannette, 69, 70, and 71. Five VG-EX+ 4.5: #54, 60 Moran, 61 Marto (considered to be one of the toughest cards to obtain in high grade), 63, and 76 Johnson. Six VG-EX 4: #51, 56, 66 Brown, 73, 74, and 75 O'Brien. One VG+ 3.5: #55 Jeffries. One VG 3: #72. This set was assembled with a concern for all factors, including special consideration to overall eye-appeal. Each card in this set is stunning and displays with incredibly clean, crisp images and bold colors. Many collectors are of the opinion that grading companies are unfairly tough on oversized cards, such as T9 Turkey Reds, because small technical flaws can appear especially exaggerated compared to those on smaller cards. This is simply an amazing high-grade complete set (minus one) of the most desirable boxing issue ever produced. The total SMR value (factoring in the seven half grades at the lower whole-grade level and excluding the two cards graded lower than VG-EX) is $8,375. This value obviously does not account for the tremendous amount of time, energy, and effort that have been invested in its assembly. This offering represents a remarkable collecting opportunity to acquire an outstanding complete set (minus one) of one of the most visually appealing and historically significant boxing-card sets ever produced. Total: 25 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000++. SOLD FOR $7,703
