1890 N310 Mayo's Cut Plug Prizefighters Complete Set (35): #2 PSA Set Registry! (3.24 GPA)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,666
Complete 35-card set of these extraordinarily rare nineteenth-century boxing tobacco cards. N310 Mayo Prizefighters are one of the earliest and rarest of all boxing issues. Extremely attractive set of these classic cards. Each card in this set has been graded and encapsulated by PSA, and this set holds the second spot on the PSA Set Registry for this issue. Highlighted by all the great stars and Hall of Famers from the era, including John L. Sullivan and James Corbett. PSA Grading Composite: EX 5 (6 cards): Carney, Creeden, Dime, Goss, Hall, and Mitchell (MC). VG-EX+ 4.5 (1 card): S. Smith. VG-EX 4 (10 cards): Dixon, Gibbons, Godfrey, Griffo, Lavigne, Leonard, McBride, O'Donnell, Slavin, and Walcott. VG 3 (8 cards): Chonskia, Edwards, Fitzsimmons, Kilrain, Maher, Ryan, B. Smith, and E. Smith. GOOD+ 2.5 (2 cards): Corbett and Jackson. GOOD 2 (5 cards): Daley, Griffen, Myers, Plimmer, and Van Heest. PR 1 (3 cards): Burns, McAuliffe, and Sullivan. Extremely rare boxing cards such as these are currently valued at a very small fraction of similarly rare and substantial baseball cards. In comparison, they represent an extraordinary collecting value. Rarely offered as a complete set in any grade, this is a very attractive complete set of one of the most elusive and important boxing tobacco issues of the era. This is only the second complete set of this issue that we have ever offered! (The first set, which was not encapsulated and had no cards in Ex, appeared as Lot 1345 in REA's May 2012 sale, and sold for $4,444.) Total: 35 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000+. SOLD FOR $2,666
