1955 Gil Hodges Pro-Model World Series Bat - Hodges Family Provenance!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,036

Rare H&B block-letter (last name only) model ("S2") bat specially produced for Brooklyn Dodgers first baseman Gil Hodges for use during the 1955 World Series. This bat has a very special provenance: It was initially purchased by our consignor at the 2000 Leland's "Dynasty Auction" (Lot 1543; sold for $5,178), which featured twenty-one lots originating from the Gil Hodges Estate. Among the more notable Hodges items in that auction were four World Series bats (this was the only 1955 World Series bat in the sale), five All-Star Game bats, four jerseys, and two Gold Glove Awards. Ideally, the bat has remained in our consignor's sole possession since the time he purchased it in 2000.

The bat is stamped "World Series 1955" and "Brooklyn Dodgers" in block letters above and below (respectively) Hodges’ name on the barrel. All of the manufacturer's stampings remain distinct and legible, and the bat, which is not cracked, displays appropriate light use. Players usually received only two bats for World Series use, making each example an event-specific extreme rarity. Given the significance of the year and the status of the player, this is one of the most desirable Brooklyn Dodgers World Series bats that could possibly exist. 1955 marked the only season in Brooklyn Dodgers franchise history that the club won the World Series. While many more World Championships lay in store for the Dodgers in Los Angeles, it was only in 1955 that the celebration took place in Flatbush. Hodges contributed to the Dodgers seven-game victory in 1955 by batting .292 with 1 home run and 5 RBI.

One of the most popular players in Dodgers history, Hodges finished his career with 370 home runs, 1,274 RBI, and a .273 lifetime batting average, numbers which continue to earn him support for future election to the Baseball Hall of Fame. World Series bats have long been highly prized by collectors due to both their rarity and inherent provenance, especially those issued to prominent players such as Hodges. This is the ultimate for any Gil Hodges or Brooklyn Dodgers collector and certainly the finest Gil Hodges pro-model bat we have ever offered. Length: 35 inches. Weight: 33.6 ounces. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,036
