1963 Cuno Barragan Chicago Cubs Home Jersey - MEARS A10
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,541
Chicago Cubs home jersey worn by catcher Cuno Barragan. Graded A10 by MEARS. The white flannel pinstripe jersey features the Cubs multicolor embroidered team logo on the left breast. The number "9" is appliquéd on the reverse in blue felt. The Cubs "bear" patch adorns the left sleeve. The uniform number, year, set number, and size ("9-1963-1-44") are chain-stitched in black upon a white strip tag in the collar. Located on the left front tail is a "Wilson 44" label. Original and unaltered, the jersey displays light wear throughout, including a small tear along the left side. The lack of wear is not surprising, given the fact that Barragan only appeared in one game with the Cubs in 1963. Barragan's entire three-year career (1961-1963) was spent with the Cubs, during which time he was the only player to wear number "9." The number "9" was often, but not exclusively, issued to catchers with the Cubs during the 1960s and 1970s. Randy Hundley was the next to wear it in 1966, who in turn passed it on to Steve Swisher in 1974. Gabby Hartnett also wore number "9" for a few years in the 1930s. The first player to wear number "9" with the Cubs was Rogers Hornsby, in 1932. 1960s-era Cubs home flannels have always been desirable among collectors for their aesthetic appeal and this jersey, graded A10 by MEARS is exemplary.
