1939 Bill Posedel Brooklyn Dodgers Game-Issued Road Jersey

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,015

Brooklyn Dodgers road jersey issued to pitcher Bill Posedel in 1939. The gray flannel, zipper-front jersey is lettered "Brooklyn" on the front and features the number "51" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in blue felt. A 1939 "Baseball Centennial" patch adorns the left sleeve. The name "W. Posedell" (misspelled) is chain-stitched in red in the collar. Also located in the collar are a "Spalding" label, a "44" size tag, and a laundry tag. The year, "39," is chain-stitched in red on the rear tail. Bill Posedel made his major league debut with the Dodgers in 1938 as a thirty-two-year-old rookie, finishing the year with an 8-9 record. Right before the start of the 1939 season, on March 31, Posedel was traded to the Boston Bees. As a result, he never wore this uniform in 1939. His trade to Boston explains why the jersey displays the wrong uniform number. Posedel wore number "21" in 1938, but after his trade that number went to catcher Al Todd. As a result, the number "21" was removed from this jersey and replaced by the number "51." Since no player wore number "51" with the Dodgers in 1939, it is reasonable to assume that this jersey was simply kept on hand as an extra. Of course, it might have later been sent down for use in the minors and/or used during spring training in 1940; however, in those cases the patches are normally removed from the sleeves. Ideally, the desirable 1939 Centennial patch was left intact on this jersey, which greatly enhances its aesthetic appeal and makes it all the more desirable for advanced collectors. Aside from the number change, the jersey is complete as issued, and displays moderate wear, including minor soil stains and a few tiny tears. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $3,000++. SOLD FOR $2,015
