Rare 1941 Joe DiMaggio "Holy Rosary Day" Broadside with DiMaggio Family Provenance!

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $711

Dating from the season of Joe DiMaggio's historic consecutive-game hitting streak, this extremely rare broadside, issued by the Holy Rosary Church, heralds "Joltin Joe's" appearance at the church's "Holy Rosary Day" picnic held at Carsonia Park (located in Reading, Pennsylvania) on August 10, 1941. The colorful cardboard broadside features a full-length image of DiMaggio in a batting pose while the text guarantees DiMaggio's presence at the event: "Joe DiMaggio In Person/The Baseball King Will Positively Appear In The Crystal Ballroom - Come And See The Great Joe." Ideally, this broadside originates directly from DiMaggio's personal collection and is accompanied by a signed letter of provenance by his two granddaughters, Paula DiMaggio Hamra and Kathie DiMaggio Stein. DiMaggio was at the height of his popularity at the time this broadside was issued, for it was less than a month earlier that he hit in an incredible 56 consecutive games, a mark which stands to this day. The church made it as convenient as possible for DiMaggio to appear at the picnic, as the Yankees played a doubleheader with the A's in Philadelphia that afternoon. According to an article in the April 8, 1941, issue of the Reading Eagle, the proceeds from the event were to be used for the construction of a new church building. This is the only example of this rare broadside we have ever seen and it seems highly unlikely that more than a few, if any others, have survived. That it features a full-length image of DiMaggio and dates from the 1941 season makes it an especially significant piece. The broadside (17 x 22 inches) displays creasing, with a few tears, along the bottom border (affecting some of the text), as well as general light creasing throughout and a few minor edge tears. In Very Good condition overall. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 24.75 x 29.5 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500+. SOLD FOR $711
