1910 John McGraw Tuxedo Tobacco Advertising Sign

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,629

Rare Tuxedo Tobacco advertising sign featuring Hall of Fame manager John McGraw. A large portrait image of McGraw is displayed on the right portion of the sign, next to which is printed his rousing endorsement of Tuxedo Tobacco: "Tuxedo gives my pipe smoking a keen enjoyment that I have experienced with no other tobacco. Supreme in mildness and fragrance is Tuxedo." An illustration of a Tuxedo Tobacco tin appears in the lower left. This is one of a set of three Tuxedo Tobacco baseball advertising signs issued at the time, with the other two featuring, respectively, Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson. The Tuxedo Tobacco advertising signs have always been revered by collectors for their majestic display value, extraordinary rarity, and for the great stars they feature. Each of the three full-color advertising signs in this series, which are similar in design, is universally recognized as among the most spectacular and desirable of all 1910-era baseball advertising displays. However, because of their scarcity, even the most advanced collections have rarely included more than one of these three Tuxedo baseball advertising signs. While the Walter Johnson example is the rarest of the three, McGraw, like Mathewson, is quite elusive and we cannot recall having seen more than a few at public auction over the years. The offered sign (20 x 10 inches) displays a few minor creases and has benefitted from professional restoration to a large corner chip in the upper right, an oval-shaped tear in the center, and a tear in the area of McGraw's neck. Although all of the cosmetic repairs remain visible to the naked eye, they remain quite unobtrusive and the piece has an apparent Very Good to Excellent overall appearance. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 27.5 x 19 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,629
