1961 "Salute To Roger Maris" 61st Home Run Pin - Rare Red Number "1" Variation

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $593

This large style souvenir pin-back button measures 3 1/2" in diameter and is by far the rarer of the two varieties of the "Salute To Roger Maris" pin-back button issued to commemorate Roger Maris' 61st Home Run. This style pin is black and white with the exception of a single red number "1" in the box score, which represents Maris' momentous record-setting 61st home run in the bottom of the fourth inning at Yankee Stadium on the final day of the 1961 season. The far more common style "Salute to Roger Maris" pin backs are of an entirely different and cheaper construction, have a different and lower-quality portrait of Maris, and can most easily be distinguished from the offered rarer and far more desirable variety in that the number "1" in the fourth inning box score is in black, not red. The offered button was definitely issued immediately following Maris' 61st home run. We have often wondered whether the more common inferior variety was issued years later, but have never been able to establish this with certainty. In any event, this is one of the classic souvenirs from the 1961 home-run race and a "must have" classic for any advanced Roger Maris or baseball pin-back collection. One tiny "surface bump" just to the right of Maris' portrait image. Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $300+. SOLD FOR $593
