1941 Kanas City Monarchs vs. Chicago American Giants Program with Satchel Paige on the Cover
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $533
Extremely rare Negro League program issued for a July 4, 1941, doubleheader at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. The main event was a game between two Negro League perennial powers, the Kansas City Monarchs and Chicago American Giants, while the other game matched the St. Louis Giants against Scullin Steel. If there were any doubt as to what player was the main draw for the event, one need look no further than the cover, which features a full-length image of Kansas City's Leroy "Satchel" Paige. The program also includes a full-page biography of Paige, whom it calls "America's One-Man Baseball Team." The preprinted lineups include Crutchfield, Lyles, Pennington, Young, Reeves, and Henderson for Chicago, and Paige, Sims, Allen, Bibbs, O'Neal, Green, H. Smith, and Brown for Kansas City (all of the pitchers for each club are listed on the lineup sheet). A scoring page for the other game is also included. Based upon the rosters for each club, this program can be conclusively dated to 1941. The eight-page program is not scored (for either game) and displays moderate wear. Light staining is evident at the base of the front cover and there is interior tape reinforcement to the base of both covers, as well as to the first and last pages. A few red ink stains affect the second scoring page (St. Louis Giants vs. Scullin Steel). Technically in Good to Very Good condition overall, but still with great visual appeal for display. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $533
