1936 East vs. West "All-Star Classic" Negro League Scorecard with Josh Gibson!
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $533
Extremely rare and significant fold-over scorecard program issued for the 1936 "East vs. West Colored All-Star Classic," held at Chicago's Comiskey Park on April 23rd. The preprinted lineups include Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell, and Chester Williams for the East, and Andrew Patterson, Herman Dunlap, and Alexander Radcliff for the West. The names of the starting pitchers (Matlock for the East and Cornelius for the West) are filled in by hand in pencil. Satchel Paige, who did appear in the game, is listed as one of the substitutes for the East. The game has only been partially scored for the top half of the first inning. The East defeated the West 10-2 in front of 26,400 fans. This was the fourth East vs. West game ever played, which was the Negro League equivalent of the Major League All-Star Game, promoting the game, the Negro Leagues, and showcasing the game's greatest stars. The program (6 x 9 inches) displays a heavy vertical fold, as well as two additional light vertical folds, and some minor creasing. In Very Good condition. Negro League items from the 1930s are exceedingly rare and this piece is no exception. This is the first 1936 East vs. West scorecard we have ever offered, and for scholars and collectors of alike, it would be impossible not to appreciate the significance of this rarity. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $533
