1913 Homestead Grays Large-Format Team-Cabinet Photo with Cum Posey!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $11,258

Extremely significant and rare original large-format team-cabinet photo of the Homestead Grays dating from 1913. Fifteen team members are pictured posing together on the field, including Hall of Famer and team founder Cum Posey, who is pictured in the middle row, third from the left. The caption along the base reads "Homestead Grays/Champions of Homestead/+ Vicinity, 1913." This is an extraordinarily historic photo and, to the best of our knowledge, the earliest team photo of the legendary Homestead Grays extant. The Homestead Grays club was officially founded in 1912 by Posey, who, after his playing days with the club, built the team into one of the most prominent Negro League clubs of all time. Although Posey deliberately chose not to affiliate the Grays with any of the organized leagues for many years, he finally relented in 1935 by entering his club in the Negro National League. Powered by a lineup featuring Josh Gibson and Buck Leonard, the Grays proceeded to win nine consecutive Negro National League championships and three Negro World Series titles between the years 1937 and 1945, thereby cementing the club's reputation as one of the greatest dynasties in baseball history. Any and all Negro League photographs dating prior to 1920 are exceedingly rare. The fact that this example documents the birth of the Homestead Grays, and also features team founder Cum Posey during his playing days, makes it a particularly remarkable museum-caliber piece. The photo (9.5 x 7.5 inches), which is affixed to a cabinet-card mount, displays three very minor surface blemishes (one of which touches upon Posey's jersey), an extremely light surface wrinkle in the upper right corner, and a tiny diagonal crease in the lower right. Fortunately, none of those minor condition anomalies detracts in the least from the photo's overall Excellent to Mint appearance. The mount (13.25 x 11.75 inches) is heavily stained with a corner chip in the lower right (Good condition), but as can be seen (as it was previously matted and framed and the mat accompanies), none of the defects are visible when the piece is properly matted. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $11,258
