Circa 1911 Negro League Real-Photo Postcard

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,896

Rare Negro League real-photo postcard, dating from the early 1900s, picturing ten members of an unidentified team. Encapsulated and graded Good 30 by SGC. It should be noted that SGC identified the piece as "Circa 1911 Real Photo PC Chicago Union Giants," probably based on a vintage pencil notation written on the reverse that reads "1911 Chicago Union Colored Giants." However, the circular logo on the left breast of eight of the players pictured appears to be the letter "U" with a small "C" overlapping each of its sides (two players are wearing different uniforms, one of which displays the interlocking letters "LG" on the left breast). A very similar postcard, featuring the same players but in different positions, sold on eBay on March 13, 2013 (for $2,400). The sale of that card resulted in an interesting thread on the Net54 chat board (http://net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=165292). As one can see, a number of different team and player identifications were suggested by the board members. While we cannot confirm or deny any of those identifications, be they player or team, any and all Negro League photos from this early period are both rare and desirable. This is obviously a card of great potential significance. Hopefully, more research will one day conclusively identify the team and year, but until that time, it shall still at the very least remain an exceptional real-photo postcard documenting the history of black baseball during the early twentieth century. Aside from the aforementioned pencil notation on the reverse, the card (5.5 x 3.5 inches) displays only light corner wear and presents as Excellent. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,896
